At Freelanzr we have started calling this current period in the evolution of work the Autonomous Economy. We believe that this Autonomous Economy is both the future and the byproduct of the Sharing Economy as well as the long slog out of the industrial revolution combined with the backlash to companies ending any loyalty to the workers who spent their lives working there.
Dictionary.com says autonomy is “freedom from external control or influence; independence.” And this is clearly what modern workers are looking for. Independence; Independence from bad bosses, corporate uniforms, oppressive work cubes, and independence from the feeling of being trapped doing tasks with no personal connection to them.
The top reply when freelancers are asked what they like most about freelancing is:
“I love the flexibility. “I can do what I want, when I want.”
The result is the well documented increase in freelance workers. 40% of the workforce will be freelancers in four years according to Intuit.
